Bio.
Wanying Ling (凌宛莹)
is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong.
I study how individual choices in work and family life accumulate to shape population health and well-being. My research integrates three strands: (1) a formal demographic perspective, using life expectancy and derived indicators to map population-level patterns and temporal change; (2) a social epidemiological perspective, identifying how work and family structures shape health and subjective well-being; and (3) a computational social science perspective, leveraging novel data and analytic strategies to link micro-level behavior to macro-level patterns. Methodologically, I develop new ways to observe and measure social behavior—exploring nontraditional data-collection tools and designing concepts and indicators—to revisit classic and everyday questions and generate new insights.
My recent research interests include: skills and tasks of the Chinese occupations; generative AI in the social sciences; age-specific estimates of the labor participation rate.
